For its summer 2007 summer exhibition, the gallery at the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University presents:
STENCILS: Public Space and social intervention
As part of the gallery’s ongoing series of guest curator exhibitions, James Manning the interim NESAD/SU Gallery Director has invited two Boston curators/ performance artists to organize this exhibit which will push the boundaries of how the public experiences and interacts with art. The curators of STENCILS are Hiroko Kikuchi and Alice Vogler. Kikuchi co-organized the 2005 exhibit Sifting the Inner Belt at the Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts and is also a founding member of National Bitter Melon Council. Alice Vogler is a performance artist and member of the Mobius Artists Group and is a part of the TEST collaborative group.

STENCILS features an impressive list of fourteen of the areas best emerging artists specializing in interactive and performance based art. The artists include: Dirk Adams, Beth Balliro, Michael Gardiner, Geoff Hargadon, Lazaro Montano, Lucas Murida, Liz Nofziger, Melina O'Grady & Niko, Vela Phelan, Paul Roax, Claudia Salamanca, Jonathan Santos, and Andi Sutton. The exhibition itself is designed as an interactive event, each of the artists will be presenting work in the gallery that the viewer can also experience outside of the gallery space. Some of the work is
performance based with actual performances taking place during the exhibition at locations around the city, others will feature components that the viewer can interact with, both in the gallery space and outside of the gallery on their own. Works will cover a wide range of subjects, materials and media and will play with all of your senses. STENCILS will include painting, sound art, guided tours, scent based works, shadow projections, live interactive performances and more.
To get the full scope of the work presented one is encouraged to interact with the work both in the gallery space and outside. All of the work in the show is designed to spark discussion about art and its purpose as a tool for social commentary. A full schedule of all the related events and performance will be announced and available in the gallery space during the run of the exhibition.
About the project Kikuchi and Vogler state: “This is a public space intervention project that illustrates civic landscapes, using temporary marking and communication devices within the concept of stencil and stenciling. Not limited to traditional or commonly- known references of stencil and/or stenciling, this project highlights their definition and function in relation to the public in varying degrees as a medium. The exhibition will provide an experimental research platform to explore the public domain and social interaction, and juncture art and community development. The goal is to assemble a wide range of works that is driven by the above questions and encourage participants to develop works addressing the creative and informal "common" in publicly-accessible spaces. It is a dialogue-based project that is manifested with the participation and co-authorship of the public.”
